Advocacy and design are synonymous. As an advocate, I strive to create equity through the creation and implementation of designs. I engage with people who are directly and indirectly affected by the designs through participatory practices and co-design methods. These practices and methods ensure a variety of perspectives are brought into the process. Equity does not solve the issue of systematic barriers that are in place which prohibit equality from the beginning. But I believe more equity will help to break down the systematic barriers that are currently in place in our society.
Architect Eliel Saarinen said, "Always design a thing by considering it's next largest context - a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, and an environment in a city." I apply that same mindset to my designs. I have an obligation to think about the implications of the designs I put into the world. Everything affects everything and it is irresponsible to think you are exempt. Designs have the power to create equity.
Every process is varied and no two processes are the same. No matter what the end goal, every process I partake in aims to create and maintain equity.
Equity through design.
